SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Have you ever dreamed of dancing with a deck of cards, becoming a knight in shining armor or sprouting petals as a flower? If yes, then the Contemporary Theater Company and GEAR Productions want to hear from you.

The two South Kingstown theater troupes team up to produce an original adaption of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. In a unique move, the two companies pledge to find a role for everyone in this timeless tale that follows a girl with the misfortune to fall down a rabbit hole. An open casting call is scheduled for Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 in Wakefield, R.I.

"We're creating a positive performance experience for as many community members as possible with all skill sets," said Beth Berry from GEAR Productions, who will adapt and direct the show.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" features actors from the Adeline LaPlante Memorial Center, Ocean State Community Resources and Perspectives Corp. alongside performers from the Contemporary Theater Company and wider community. The LaPlante center, Ocean State Community Resources and Perspectives support people with physical or cognitive impairments.

Two years in the making, the idea for the partnership blossomed when Berry approached the Contemporary Theater Company about staging a show encompassing all members of the community. Moving the concept from drawing board to reality were grants awarded this spring by the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities at Rhode Island College and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA).

The Sherlock Center encourages projects that support a vision of individuals with disabilities participating fully in their communities. The center said the proposal by the two theater troupes represented a unique opportunity to involve the entire community in one production. RISCA called the proposal "unique among applicants" and "Grade-A inclusive theater." The grant awarded to this project was one of the largest by dollar value.

Casting workshops will be held Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 between 5 p.m. at 8 p.m. Call (401) 207-1853 to schedule a 30-minute timeslot and for location details. Performers must be at least 14. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" shows Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the South Kingstown High School Auditorium, 215 Columbia St., Wakefield, R.I.
